Improves File Size And Performance

PBR Materials in 2025

To keep file size down and improve performance when using PBR (Physically Based Rendering) materials in SketchUp, consider the following strategies:

  • Optimize Texture Resolution: Use lower resolution textures where high detail is not necessary. This reduces the file size significantly without compromising visual quality.
  • Compress Textures: Use image formats that support compression, such as JPEG or PNG, and apply appropriate compression settings to reduce file size.
  • Limit Texture Usage: Use textures only where necessary. Avoid applying textures to surfaces that won't be visible in the final render.
  • Reuse Textures: Instead of creating multiple similar textures, reuse existing ones across different materials when possible.
  • Simplify Geometry: Complex geometry can increase file size. Simplify models where possible, especially for objects that will be textured.
  • Use Proxy Models: For complex objects, use proxy models that are replaced with detailed versions only during rendering.
  • Clean Up the Model: Regularly purge unused materials, components, and layers from your SketchUp model to keep the file size down.
